7About FRT Triggers
What is an FRT trigger?
FRT stands for forced reset trigger. It is a semi-automatic trigger that uses the firearm’s own cycling action to push the trigger back to its reset position after every shot. You still pull the trigger once for each round. Read our full guide: What Is a Forced Reset Trigger?
How does a forced reset trigger work?
You pull the trigger and one round fires. As the bolt carrier or slide cycles, the FRT uses that movement to push the trigger forward to its reset point and holds it there until the action has closed. Nothing fires until you pull the trigger again. See the step-by-step cycle in How Does a Forced Reset Trigger Work?
Is an FRT the same as full auto?
No. A machine gun fires more than one round with a single function of the trigger. A forced reset trigger fires one round per pull, and you must pull again for every shot. That is why federal law does not currently classify FRTs as machine guns.
Is an FRT the same as a binary trigger?
No. A binary trigger fires one round when you pull and another when you release. A forced reset trigger fires only on the pull. The action forces the trigger back to reset, and nothing fires until you pull again.
What is the difference between an FRT trigger and a forced reset selector?
An FRT trigger replaces your whole fire control group. A forced reset selector, such as the Atrius FRS or the AS Designs ARC-Fire V2, replaces only the safety selector and works with your existing trigger. Compare them in FRT Trigger Types.
What does a 3-position selector do?
Most FRTs we carry have three positions: Safe (the trigger cannot be pulled), Semi (works like a standard semi-automatic trigger) and FRT (forced reset mode). Some models, such as the Rare Breed FRT-15L2, use a 2-position selector instead.
Which FRT trigger is best?
It depends on your firearm and what you want. For the AR-15, the Rare Breed FRT-15L3 is the most established single-stage option, the FRT-15C3 gives a two-stage feel, and the Partisan Disruptor FRT is a popular drop-in cassette. If you like your current trigger, a forced reset selector may suit you better. Text us your setup and we’ll recommend one.
6Legal & State Restrictions
Are FRT triggers legal?
Under current federal law, forced reset triggers are not classified as machine guns. That position follows a 2024 federal court ruling and a May 2025 settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice and Rare Breed Triggers. State and local laws vary, and some states restrict or prohibit FRTs. This is general information, not legal advice.
Which states do you not ship FRT triggers to?
We do not ship FRT triggers to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Washington, D.C.. Checkout blocks shipping addresses in these locations. See our state restrictions.
What happens if I order from a restricted state?
Our checkout will not accept a shipping address in a restricted location. If an order for a restricted address gets through, we cancel it and issue a full refund, including any shipping charges.
Can I ship to a friend or a freight forwarder in another state?
No. We ship only to the buyer’s address in a state where FRTs are legal, and we cannot ship to freight forwarders or reshipping services. Please don’t try to get around state restrictions.
Do I need an FFL to buy an FRT trigger?
No. Under current federal law, triggers and selectors are firearm parts, not firearms, so they ship directly to you without an FFL transfer. Always check your own state and local laws before ordering.
How old do I have to be to order?
You must be at least 18 years old, and of legal age to own the product where you live, to order from us.
7Compatibility & Installation
Will an FRT trigger fit my AR-15?
Most AR-15 FRTs drop into a standard mil-spec lower, but many also need a full-auto pattern bolt carrier group and won’t fit lowers with a sear block. Every product page lists its requirements. If you’re unsure, text us your lower and bolt carrier.
Do I need a full-auto bolt carrier group?
Many AR-15 FRTs, including Rare Breed, Partisan Disruptor and Trinity triggers, require a full-auto pattern (M16-profile) bolt carrier group. Some HK-specific triggers, such as the Rare Breed FRT-MR3 and FRT-RD3, work with the factory semi-auto carrier. Check the product page for your model.
Do I need a special buffer or spring?
Many manufacturers recommend a specific buffer weight, such as an H2 or H3, so the action cycles within the range the trigger is designed for. Recommendations are listed on each product page. Following them is the biggest factor in how reliably an FRT runs.
Is there an FRT for the MP5 or SP5?
Yes. MARS makes complete FRT lowers for the HK SP5 and SP5K, Zenith ZF-5 and ZF-5K, PTR 9, MAC 5 and 5K, and MKE AP5 and AP5-P. Rare Breed’s FRT-RD3 fits HK MP5 and SP5 pattern firearms in AMBI or SEF grip frames. See HK & MP5 FRT.
Is there an FRT for Glock and other pistols?
Yes. We carry Texas Triggers kits for Glock Gen 1 to Gen 6 (except the Glock 44), the Freedom Finger 22TY for the Taurus TX22, and the Freedom Finger FRT for the Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0. See Glock FRT triggers.
Do I need a gunsmith to install an FRT?
Many drop-in AR-15 FRTs install like a standard fire control group. Handgun FRTs, such as Glock kits, usually need careful fitting, and installation by a qualified gunsmith is recommended. If you’re not comfortable working on fire control parts, always use a gunsmith.
Will installing an FRT affect my firearm’s warranty?
Installing aftermarket parts can affect your firearm manufacturer’s warranty. Check with your firearm’s manufacturer if that matters to you. Most rifle FRTs are drop-in, so you can usually reinstall your original trigger later.
